On the Messiah's Human Nature

The Messiah shall be

born of a Woman

Genesis 3:15 And I [the Lord] will put enmity between thee [Devil] and the Woman, and between thy seed and her seed; He shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Explanation: In this first prophecy about the Messiah the Lord promises that the Descendant of the Woman (Virgin Mary) will crush the Devil, although in doing so He will suffer physically. The prophecy was fulfilled when He died on the Cross.

Targum Pseudo-Jonathan on Genesis 3:15 (ancient rabbinic literature): "And it shall be that when the sons of the woman study the Torah [the books of Moses] diligently and obey its injunctions, they will direct themselves to smite you [the serpent] on the head and slay you; but when the sons of the woman forsake the commandments of the Torah and do not obey its injunctions, you will direct yourself to bite them on the heel and afflict them. However, there will be a remedy for the sons of the woman, but for you, sepent, there will be no remedy. They shall make peace with one another in the end, in the very end of days, in the days of the King Messiah."

Genesis 22:18 [The Angel to Abraham:] And in thy Seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

The Scepter from Judah

Genesis 49:10 The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from his loins, until Shiloh comes [He, to Whom it is determined to come]; and He is the expectation of nations. [Septuagint translation]

 

Explanation: The Jews always had rulers from their own tribe. King Herod, being an Idumean, was the first ruler of foreign descent. Precisely during his reign the Messiah was born, fulfilling the prophecy. "Shiloh" most probably means "Conciliator." Jesus reconciled us with God.

Romans 9:5 Of whom [Jews] as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever.

Hebrews 7:14 For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.

John 18:31 Then said Pilate unto them [the Jewish authorities, accusing Jesus], Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death. [Here the Jewish authorities recognized that they lost the power to administer the death penalty].

Son of David

2 Samuel 7:12-13 And when thy [king David's] days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy Seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I [God the father] will establish His kingdom; He shall build an house [the Church] for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever.

Jeremiah 23:5 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.

2 Samuel 7:16 and 1 Chron. 17:12-13 Thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee; thy throne shall be established for ever... I will be his Father, and he shall be my Son.

Psalm 132:11 The Lord hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it: Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne.

Explanation: The Messiah is called a "Branch" because He was to be born without a human father.

Matthew 9:27 And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou Son of David, have mercy on us.

Acts 13:22 And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will.

Revelation 22:16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.

On The Messiah's Divine Nature

He shall be called Lord

Psalm 110:1 The Lord [God the Father] said unto my Lord [His Son], Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.

Jeremiah 23:6 In his [the Messiah's] days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely; and this is his name whereby he shall be called, the Lord our righteousness.

Malachi 3:1 The Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in.

Baruch 3:35-37 This is our God, and there shall no other be of in comparison him. He hath found out all the way of knowledge, and hath given it unto Jacob his servant, and to Israel his beloved. Afterward did he shew himself upon earth, and conversed with men.

Note. The Book of Baruch belongs to Deutero-canonical Scriptures. It was written probably the first century BC, and was held in great esteem by the Fathers of the ancient Church.

 

Matthew 22:41-45 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David. He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool? If David then call him Lord [=God], how is he his son?

Mark 12:36 For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool.

A commentary from Targum Jonathan (on Isaiah 9:6): "The prophet announced to the house of David that: A boy has been born to us, a son has been given unto us, who has taken the Torah upon himself to guard it; and his name has been called by the One who gives wonderful counsel, the Mighty God, He who lives forever: Messiah, in whose day peace shall abound for us."

A commentary from Pereq Shalom R. Yose the Galilean said: "The name of the Messiah is Peace, for it is said, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."

A commentary from Midrash Mishle, S. Buber edition: "The Messiah is called by eight names: Yinnon, Tzemah, Pele [`Miracle'], Yo'etz ['Counselor'], Mashiah ['Messiah'], El ['God'], Gibbor ['Hero'], and Avi 'Ad Shalom ['Eternal Father of Peace']"

John 1:1-3 In the beginning was the Word [God-Son], and the Word was with God, and the Word was God... All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

Born in Bethlehem

Micah 5:2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

A commentary from Targum Jonathan (on Micah 5:2): "And you, O Bethlehem Ephrath, you who were too small to be numbered among the thousands of the house of Judah, from you shall come forth before Me the Messiah, to exercise dominion over Israel, he whose name was mentioned from before, from the days of creation."

 

Matthew 2:1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,

Luke 2:4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

John 7:42 [The Jews arguing among themselves:] Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?

Gifts shall be presented unto Him

Psalm 72:10 The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall bring presents; the kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts.

The massacre in Bethlehem

Jeremiah 31:15 Thus saith the Lord: A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rahel [their grand-grand mother] weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not.

Explanation: Ramah and Bethlehem where neighboring villages.

Matthew 2:16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men.

The flight into Egypt

Hosea 11:1 When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.

Matthew 2:13 When they [the Magi] were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.

He Shall be a Prophet

Deuteronomy 18:18-19 [God says to Moses:] I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. And whatever man shall not hearken unto My words which that Prophet shall speak in My name, I will take vengeance on him.

Explanation: The postscript, made at the end of the book Leviticus more than 450 years B.C., states that among the many prophets which were sent to the Jews not one was as great and important as Moses. The Jews always expected to see in the coming Messiah their greatest prophet and lawgiver.

Ralbag (Gersonides, ancient rabbinic literature) comments on the above text: "A prophet from the midst of thee. In fact the Messiah is such a Prophet... "

Matthew 21:11 And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.

Luke 7:16 And there came a fear on all, and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people.

The Star out of Jacob

and the Light of the World

Numbers 24:17 I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth. [i.e. He will destroy all the enemies of God]

Isaiah 49:6 And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel. I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth.

Isaiah 60:3 And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.

Explanation: Jesus is called the "Star" because He guides all to their salvation.

And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth. And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.

Psalm 110:4 The Lord hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou [Messiah] art a Priest for ever after the order of Melchisedek.

Zechariah 6:12 And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The Branch; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the Lord.

Explanation: The mysterious priest Melchisedek of Genesis foreshadowed the eternal Priest Christ, as St. Paul explains in his epistle to the Hebrews.

 

Hebrews 3:1 Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus.

Hebrews 5:5-10 Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him [His Father], Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee. As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedek. Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared. Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedek.

Hebrews 7:1-8:2 ...This Melchisedek met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him, and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. First, his name means "king of righteousness"; then also, "king of Salem" means "king of peace." Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, like the Son of God he remains a priest forever. Just think how great he was: Even the patriarch Abraham gave him a tenth of the plunder! ...And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedek there ariseth another priest, Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life. For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedek [Psalm 110:4]. For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof. For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God. And inasmuch as not without an oath he was made priest ... By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament. And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death. But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself. For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore. Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.

He Shall be the Good Shepherd

Ezekiel 34:23-25 [God the Father promises to the Jews:] I will set up one Shepherd over them, and He shall feed them, even My servant David [the Messiah]; He shall feed them, and He shall be their Shepherd. And I the Lord will be their God, and My servant David a prince among them; I the Lord have spoken it. And I will make with them a covenant of peace.

 

John 10:11-16 [Jesus to the Jews:] I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep. I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep. And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

He Shall be King

Psalm 2:6-12 Yet have I [God-Father] set my King [Messiah] upon my holy hill of Zion... Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little.

A commentary from Sanhedrin 98a (on Zechariah 9:9): R. Alexandri said: R. Joshua opposed two verses: it is written, "And behold, one like the son of man came with the clouds of heaven" [Daniel 7:13]; whilst (elsewhere) it is written, (behold, thy king cometh unto thee...) lowly, and riding upon as ass!" - If they are meritorious, (he will come) "with the clouds of heaven"; if not, "lowly and riding upon as ass."

Another commentary from Berachot 56b (on Zechariah 9:9): If one sees an ass in a dream, he may hope for salvation, as it say, "Behold they king cometh unto thee; he is triumphant and victorious, lowly and riding upon an ass."

Matthew 21:5 Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.

Matthew 27:37 And set up over his head his accusation written, this is Jesus The King of the Jews.

John 18:33-37 Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews? The Holy Spirit

Isaiah 11:2 And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him [the Messiah], the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.

Isaiah 42:1 Behold my Servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put My Spirit upon Him; He shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.

Isaiah 61:1 [The Messiah says:] The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord [the Father] hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound.

Psalm 45:7 Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness; therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

Explanation: The oil used during ceremonial anointing symbolized the grace of the Holy Spirit.

 

Matthew 3:16-17 And Jesus, when He was baptized, went up straightway out of the water; and, lo, the heavens were opened unto Him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon Him; And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

A Messenger shall prepare His way

He Shall begin his public

mission in Galilee

Isaiah 9:1-2 There will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulon and the land of Naphtalim, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the Gentiles, by the way of the sea, along the Jordan. The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.

 

 

Matthew 4:12-17 Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee; And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim. That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying, The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles; The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up. He shall perform miracles

Isaiah 35:3-7 Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees. Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompense; he will come and save you. Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert. And the parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water.

Matthew 9:33-35 And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake: and the multitudes marvelled, saying, It was never so seen in Israel... And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.

Luke 7:21-22 And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight. Then Jesus answering said unto them [the disciple of John], Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.

He shall come to the temple

Malachi 3:1 Behold, I will send my messenger [John the Baptist], and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant [the Messiah], whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts.

His entry into Jerusalem

Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

He shall be a stumbling stone

Psalm 118:22 The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.

Isaiah 8:14 And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

Explanation: The Messiah is called the "stone" in the sense that He is the foundation for our faith [Matthew 16:18] upon which His Church is built.

A close one shall betray him

Psalm 55:12-14 For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him. But it was thou [Judas], a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance. We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company.

John 13:21-26 When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake. Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved. He shall be sold for 30 pieces of silver

His disciples shall flee

Zechariah 13:7 Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the Lord of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.

Note: Judged by both Jewish and Roman authorities, the Messiah was on trial before the court of man six times.

For he [the Messiah] shall grow up before him [his Father] as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.

Zechariah 13:6 And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.

During the seven-year period preceding the coming of the son of David, iron beams will be brought and loaded upon his neck until the Messiah's body is bent low... It was because of the ordeal of the son of David that David wept, saying, "My strength is dried up like a potsherd (Ps. 22:16)."

A commentary from Sukkah 52a (on Zechariah 12:10): "What is the cause of the mourning... It is well according to him who explains that the cause is the slaying of Messiah the son of Joseph, since that well agrees with the Scriptural verse, And they shall look upon me because they have thrust him through, and they shall mourn for him as one mourneth for his only son."

But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. The significance of Christ's Resurrection

1 Corinthians 15:3-42 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. The Destruction of Jerusalem

Daniel 9:25-27 [Archangel Gabriel to the Prophet Daniel:] Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks; the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself; and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week; and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

Matthew 24:15-19 [Jesus to His disciples:] When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains. Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house, neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.

Explanation. The entire time from the decree to restore Jerusalem to the establishment of the New Testament and the second destruction of this city is divided into three periods. Each period is measured in "week" years, i.e. seven-year spans. (The Hebrew word for "week" is "shavua" which literally means "seven.") The meaning of the prophecy is this: for the Judaic nation and for the holy city are determined 70 "weeks" (70x7= 490 years), until the coming of the Holy of Holies (Christ), who will erase lawlessness, bring eternal truth and fulfill all the prophecies. The order for the new construction of Jerusalem and the temple will serve as the beginning of these weeks. The end wiil bring a second destruction of both. These weeks are divided in the following manner. During the first seven "weeks" (i.e. 49 years) Jerusalem and the Temple will be rebuilt. Then, toward the end of the 62 weeks (i.e. 434 years) Christ will come, but He will suffer and will be put to death. In the course of the last "week" the New Testament will be established, and in the middle of this "week" regular sacrifices in the Temple of Jerusalem will cease, and there will be the abomination of desolation in the sanctuary. Then will come a people, guided by a leader, who will destroy the holy city and the Temple.

It is interesting and instructive to trace how the historical events unfolded in the time period designated by the Archangel Gabriel. The decree for the restoration of Jerusalem was issued by the Persian king Artaxerxes (of the dynasty Archaemenidae in 453 B.C.). This momentous event is described in depth by Nehemiah in the 2nd chapter of his book. The enumeration of Daniel's "weeks" should begin from the moment of the issuance of this decree. By the Greek method of numbering the years, this was the 3rd year of the 76th Olympiad or by the Roman chronology the 299th year after the founding of Rome. The restoration of the walls and Temple was protracted for a about 40 or 50 years (seven "weeks") because several heathen nations, living in the regions neighboring Jerusalem, hindered the restoration of this city in every possible way.

In accordance to the prophecy, the Messiah was to suffer for the cleansing of human sins in the period between 69 and 70 weeks. If one adds to the year of the issuance of the decree of the restoration of Jerusalem 69 weeks, i.e. 483 years, then this equals the 30th year of the Christian method of numbering years. It was around this time, from 30 to 37 AD, according to the prophecy, that the Messiah was to suffer and die. The Evangelist Luke writes that the Lord Jesus Christ came out to preach in the 15th year of the rule of the Roman emperor Tiberius. This coincides with the 782nd year from the founding of Rome or with the 30th year after the birth of Christ. The Lord Jesus Christ taught three and a half years and suffered in the 33rd or 34th year of our era, precisely during the time, indicated by St. Daniel. The Christian faith began to spread very quickly after the Resurrection of Christ, so that indeed the last, 70th Week involved the establishment of the New Testament among many people.

Jerusalem was destroyed a second time in the 70th year of this era by the Roman military leader Titus. During the siege of Jerusalem by the Roman legions, complete chaos ruled the city because of discord among the Judean leaders. As a result of this strife, religious services in the Temple were conducted very irregularly, and finally, in the Temple, as predicted by the Archangel to the prophet Daniel, reigned "abomination of desolation."

Thus, the coincidence of the prophecy both with the subsequent historical events in the life of the Hebrew nation and with the Gospel narrative is astonishing.

Here it should be mentioned that the Hebrew rabbis very often forbade their fellow countrymen to count the weeks of Daniel. The rabbi of Gemar even subjected those Hebrews, who would calculate the year of the coming of the Messiah, to the following curse: "May the bones shake of those, who calculate the times ...Perish all those who calculate the end, for men will say, since the predicted end is here and the Messiah has not come, he will never come!" (Sanhedrin 97b).

The Messiah shall judge the world

Isaiah 11:1-4 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots ... With righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth: with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked [the antichrist]. And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.

Isaiah 32:1 Behold, a King shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment.

Daniel 7:13-14 I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man [Messiah] came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days [God-Father], and they brought him near before him. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

Matthew 24:30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven [the Cross]; and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

Matthew 26:64 Jesus saith unto him [High Priest] ... Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

John 5:30 I can of mine own self do nothing; as I hear, I judge; and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

Who Interpret Isaiah 53 Messianically

The Targum

"Behold, My Servant the Messiah shall prosper." [Targum ("Targum Jonathan") to Isaiah 52:13, various editions (such as Samson H. Levey, The Messiah: An Aramaic Interpretation; the Messianic Exegesis of the Targum. (Cincinnati: Hebrew Union College, 1974): p. 63).]

In the early cycle of synagogue readings

"We know that messianic homilies based on Joseph's career (his saving role preceded by suffering), and using Isaiah 53 as the prophetic portion, were preached in certain old synagogues which used the triennial cycle..." [Rav Asher Soloff, The Fifty Third Chapter of Isaiah According to the Jewish Commentators, to the Sixteenth Century. Ph.D. Thesis (Drew University, 1967): p. 146.]

The addition of 53:4-5 to the cycle of synagogue readings was evidently of a Messianic purport by reason of the theory of a suffering Messiah. The earlier part of the Haftarah (52:7ff) dealt with the redemption of Israel, and in this connection the tribulations of the Messiah were briefly alluded to by the recital of the above two verses. Babylonian Talmud, Sanhedrin 98b

"The Rabbis said: His name is the leper scholar, as it is written, Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him a leper, smitten of God, and afflicted." [Isaiah 53:4. Soncino Talmud edition].

Ruth Rabbah 5:6

"The fifth interpretation [of Ruth 2:14] makes it refer to the Messiah. Come hither: approach to royal state. And eat of the bread refers to the bread of royalty; and dip thy morsel in the vinegar refers to his sufferings, as it is said, But he was wounded because of our transgressions." [Is. 53:5. Soncino Midrash Rabbah, vol. 8, p. 64].

The Karaite Yefeth ben Ali (10th c.)

"As to myself, I am inclined, with Benjamin of Nehawend, to regard it as alluding to the Messiah, and as opening with a description of his condition in exile, from the time of his birth to his accession to the throne: for the prophet begins by speaking of his being seated in a position of great honour, and then goes back to relate all that will happen to him during the captivity. He thus gives us to understand two things: In the first instance, that the Messiah will only reach his highest degree of honour after long and severe trials; and secondly, that these trials will be sent upon him as a kind of sign, so that, if he finds himself under the yoke of misfortunes whilst remaining pure in his actions, he may know that he is the desired one..." Another statement from Yefeth ben Ali:

"By the words surely he hath carried our sicknesses, they mean that the pains and sickness which he fell into were merited by them, but that he bore them instead... And here I think it necessary to pause for a few moments, in order to explain why God caused these sicknesses to attach themselves to the Messiah for the sake of Israel... The nation deserved from God greater punishment than that which actually came upon them, but not being strong enough to bear it... God appoints his servant to carry their sins, and by doing so lighten their punishment in order that Israel might not be completely exterminated." [Driver and Neubauer, pp. 23 ff.; Soloff pp. 108-109.]

Another statement from Yefeth ben Ali:

"And the Lord laid on him the iniquity of us all." The prophet does not by avon mean iniquity, but punishment for iniquity, as in the passage, 'Be sure your sin will find you out'. [Num. 32:23. Driver and Neubauer, p. 26; Soloff p. 109].

Mysteries of R. Shim'on ben Yohai (Midrash, date uncertain)

"And Armilaus will join battle with Messiah, the son of Ephraim, in the East gate... and Messiah, the son of Ephraim, will die there, and Israel will mourn for him. And afterwards the Holy One will reveal to them Messiah, the son of David, whom Israel will desire to stone, saying, Thou speakest falsely; already is the Messiah slain, and there is none other Messiah to stand up (after him): and so they will despise him, as it is written, 'Despised and forlorn of men'; but he will turn and hide himself from them, according to the words, 'Like one hiding his face from us'." Lekach Tov (11th c. Midrash)

"And let his [Israel's] kingdom be exalted, in the days of the Messiah, of whom it is said, 'Behold my servant shall prosper; he will be high and exalted, and lofty exceedingly'." [Driver and Neubauer, p. 36.]

Maimonides, Letter to Yemen (12th c.)

"What is to be the manner of Messiah's advent, and where will be the place of his appearance? ... And Isaiah speaks similarly of the time when he will appear, without his father or mother or family being known, he came up as a sucker before him, and as a root out of the dry earth, etc.. But the unique phenomenon attending his manifestation is, that all the kings of the earth will be thrown into terror at the fame of him - their kingdoms will be in consternation, and they themselves will be devising whether to oppose him with arms, or to adopt some different course, confessing, in fact, their inability to contend with him or ignore his presence, and so confounded at the wonders which they will see him work, that they will lay their hands upon their mouth; in the words of Isaiah, when describing the manner in which the kings will hearken to him, At him kings will shut their mouth; for that which had not been told them have they seen, and that which they had not heard they have perceived." Zohar II, 212a (medieval)

"There is in the Garden of Eden a palace named the Palace of the Sons of Sickness. This palace the Messiah enters, and He summons every pain and every chastisement of Israel. All of these come and rest upon Him. And had He not thus lightened them upon Himself, there had been no man able to bear Israel's chastisements for the transgressions of the law; as it is written, 'Surely our sicknesses he has carried'." Nachmanides (R. Moshe ben Nachman, 13th c.)

"The right view respecting this Parashah is to suppose that by the phrase my servant the whole of Israel is meant... As a different opinion, however, is adopted by the Midrash, which refers it to the Messiah, it is necessary for us to explain it in conformity with the view there maintained. The prophet says, The Messiah, the son of David of whom the text speaks, will never be conquered or perish by the hands of his enemies. And, in fact the text teaches this clearly... And by his stripes we were healed - because the stripes by which he is vexed and distressed will heal us; God will pardon us for his righteousness, and we shall be healed both from our own transgressions and from the iniquities of our fathers." Yalkut ii: 571 (13th c.)

"Who art thou, O great mountain (Zech. 4:7). This refers to the King Messiah. And why does he call him 'the great mountain?' Because he is greater than the patriarchs, as it is said, 'My servant shall be high, and lifted up, and lofty exceedingly' - he will be higher than Abraham... lifted up above Moses... loftier than the ministering angels." Yalkut ii. 620 (13th c.), in regard to Psalm 2:6

"I have drawn him out of the chastisements... The chastisements are divided into three parts: one for David and the fathers, one for our own generation, and one for the King Messiah; and this is that which is written, 'He was wounded for our transgressions'." [Driver and Neubauer, p. 10].

R. Mosheh Kohen ibn Crispin (14th c.)

"This Parashah the commentators agree in explaining of the Captivity of Israel, although the singular number is used in it throughout... As there is no cause constraining us to do so, why should we here interpret the word collectively, and thereby distort the passage from its natural sense?... As then it seemed to me that the doors of the literal interpretation of the Parashah were shut in their face, and that 'they wearied themselves to find the entrance,' having forsaken the knowledge of our Teachers, and inclined after the 'stubbornness of their own hearts,' and of their own opinion, I am pleased to interpret it, in accordance with the teaching of our Rabbis, of the King Messiah, and will be careful, so far as I am able, to adhere to the literal sense." [Driver and Neubauer, pp. 99-100].

Another comment from R. Mosheh Kohen ibn Crispin

"If his soul makes itself into a trespass-offering, implying that his soul will treat itself as guilty, and so receive punishment for our trespasses and transgressions." [Driver and Neubauer, p. 112].

R. Sh'lomoh Astruc (14th c.)

"My servant shall prosper, or be truly intelligent, because by intelligence man is really man - it is intelligence which makes a man what he is. And the prophet calls the King Messiah my servant, speaking as one who sent him. Or he may call the whole people my servant, as he says above my people (lii. 6): when he speaks of the people, the King Messiah is included in it; and when he speaks of the King Messiah, the people is comprehended with him. What he says then is, that my servant the King Messiah will prosper." [Driver and Neubauer, p. 129].

R. Elijah de Vidas (16th c.)

"Since the Messiah bears our iniquities which produce the effect of His being bruised, it follows that whoso will not admit that the Messiah thus suffers for our iniquities, must endure and suffer for them himself." [Driver and Neubauer, p. 331].

Rabbi Moshe Alshekh (El-Sheikh) of Sefad (16th c.)

"I may remark, then, that our Rabbis with one voice accept and affirm the opinion that the prophet is speaking of the King Messiah, and we ourselves also adhere to the same view." [Driver and Neubauer, p. 258].

Herz Homberg (18th-19th c.)

"The fact is, that it refers to the King Messiah, who will come in the latter days, when it will be the Lord's good pleasure to redeem Israel from among the different nations of the earth... Whatever he underwent was in consequence of their own transgression, the Lord having chosen him to be a trespass-offering, like the scape-goat which bore all the iniquities of the house of Israel."
